Homemade exfoliators for face – DIY
“Pampering yourself” is the key to happiness.
Every women wishes to pamper herself occasionally whether she is a student, a working professional or a house wife.
Early in my scientific career as an cosmetic scientist and a researcher , my typical day started around 7am in the lab with planning and developing various natural and halal skincare formulas.
I absolutely loved my chosen career path, creating halal and natural skincare range, however being a scientist and a researcher is a hard work ! The best part was to see my passion flourish.
I still remember returning home late at night, around 11 pm, with a large bundles of various skincare formulations and a computer full of necessary emails.
Due to high – stress nature of my job, I implemented once a week “Pamper day”. I tend to choose either Saturday or Sunday as a “Pamper day” , relaxing at home or even attending local salons around my area. This is the only day where I would leave behind the stress of a rigorous schedule and early mornings for floral scented linen , green tea- citrus infused water and most important my bed !!!
This blog will discuss the importance of gentle , natural exfoliators that you can use as a face mask once a week to have that “ Pampering effect” and get a quick glow to the skin.
So the question is what is an exfoliator ? how does it make tired looking skin supple and rejuvenated?
An exfoliator is also termed as an “facial polish” or a “scrub”. This is tend to be used either after cleansing or can be used on its own as a part of your skincare regime. It helps to remove and loosen any residues (makeup, dead cells) accumulated on the layer of the skin.
Note: The choice of a gentle exfoliator should be specific for the face. This is due to the skin being more delicate and is more prone to wear and tear than other parts of your body.
You should avoid skin care brands that use finely powdered nut kernels ( walnut shell, apricot kernel) as this can result in the inflammation in the epidermis layer of the skin. The effectiveness of the exfoliators depends on its particle’s size and smoothness.
Hence, we will focus on most suitable natural gentle exfoliators including clay (Fuller’s earth), ubtan and papaya .
Moreover, I have created DIY recipes that are easy to implement at home and are cheap alternatives that you can easily find in the kitchen’s cabinet.
I swear by these three gentle exfoliators that has same effect as a chemical exfoliation that you get done in high prominent beauty salons.
Let’s get started
1)Ubtan ( Dry to Acne prone skin )
What you need
- 1 cup of chickpea flour (besan)
- 1/3 cup raw rice
- 5 almonds
- 1/2 cup oatmeal
- A pinch of turmeric
- Water or rose water ( as required )
- Grind the chickpea flour, rice and almonds together in a blender, forming a mixture.
- To the mixture , add the oatmeal and turmeric powder
- Mix well and add enough water or rose water to make a thick paste
- Apply this paste to both face and neck.
- Let the face mask dry and once hardened , wash it with normal water.
Note : ubtan , rice and chickpea flour works as a gentle cleanser , removing all the impurities such as acne, dead skin cells . Further, renewing the skin and giving it a glow. Tumeric will be helpful as an antiinflammatory agent, removing blemishes and other skin impurities.
2) Multani Mitti (Fuller’s earth) (Oily/ Acne prone skin)
What you need
- ½ tablespoon fuller’s earth (multani mitti)
- ½ tablespoon rose water
- ½ sandal wood powder
- A pinch of turmeric powder
- Add all four ingredients, mix them
- Apply them on your face and neck
- Leave it to dry for 20 minutes, once hardened rinse with cold water. Avoid the eye area.
Note: This mask is very good as a natural cleanser for oily type / acne prone skin. Avoid the use for dry skin. Fuller’s earth is very rich in several nutrients (magnesium chloride).
Magnesium chloride is useful element for regeneration of new skin cells and for removing any impurities ( dead skin cells , pollutants) from the skin.
3) Papaya and lemon (Normal skin only)
What you need
- ¼ cup of ripe papaya
- 1 tablespoon honey
- ½ teaspoon of lemon juice
- I teaspoon olive oil
1)Blend or mash up the soft ripe papaya into a lump free puree
2) Add the honey, lemon juice , water and mix well
3)Apply the face mask on the face and dry it for 20 minutes
4) Finally rinse the mask off with cold water. Pat your face dry with clean towel or a muslin cloth.
Note: Papaya, honey, and lemon all contain antibacterial properties that will kill off acne-causing bacteria from the skin. Papaya also has a deep-cleansing action that will push out all the gunk from clogged pores.Olive oil is used for deep cleansing , nourishing the skin.
